For many years Thompson Rivers University has met the needs of the community by providing health and safety training. Our commitment is to continue supplying quality instruction and to offer a variety of courses that address the needs of our community.

At TRU - Williams Lake Campus we offer the following health and safety courses:

Handling Chainsaws for Beginners

Requirements: Suggested minimum age of 16 years. All students are required to have appropriate clothing for work, steel-toed boots, and work gloves.

 Chainsaw Safety  •  XOCH 0910

This 3-day certified course is Level 1 - Chainsaw Basics. It covers instruction in personal and worksite safety; hazard assessment and control; chainsaw inspection and maintenance; chainsaw handling and operations; and safe limbing and bucking practices. There will be a written examination and an industry-standard training certificate will be issued upon successful completion. Hard hats, reflective vests, safety glasses, and chainsaws supplied.

Requirements: Suggested minimum age of 16 years. All students are required to have appropriate clothing for work, steel-toed boots, and work gloves.

Dates:  March 11-13, 2025

Times: Tues-Thurs, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

 Confined Space  •  XWRK 0880

Personnel who enter confined spaces using the Permit Entry procedure must receive training.

This 1-day course covers:

  • Requirements and conditions for permitted entry
  • Hazard recognition
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Entry procedures and precautions
  • Recognition of warning signs, symptoms of exposure, and detection of prohibited conditions
  • Evacuation requirements
  • Emergency and non-entry rescue methods and procedures for calling rescue services
  • Additional hazards that may be faced during entry, information on symptoms, and consequences of exposure
  • Possible behavioral effects of hazard exposure on authorized entrants
Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 3 years.

Fall Protection  •  XOCH 0520

Even a low-elevation fall can result in injury! Along with in-class theory, you will have an opportunity for hands-on practice.

The following topics are covered:

  • General fall protection
  • The basics of falling
  • Personal fall arrest systems
  • Care and use of fall protective equipment
  • Emergency rescue
  • Fall arrest planning
  • Fall Restraint system

Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 3 years.

Fire Suppression S100/185  •  XFOR 0980

This two-day course includes an introduction to fire behavior, entrapment (S-185), suppression, tools and equipment, fire line safety, water delivery systems, WHMIS, as well as a practical portion and exam. Students must demonstrate safe working skills, proper care, proper use of equipment, and the ability to physically complete field exercises.

Requirements: 

        - Hardhat
        - Eye protection (safety glasses of goggles)
        - Hearing protection (earmuffs or ear plugs)
        - Leather work gloves
        - Steel-toed work boots
        - Suitable work clothing; preferably (but not mandatory) natural fibers or flame-resistant pants and long-sleeved shirt or coveralls
        - Rain jacket and other weather-appropriate clothing
        - Picture ID
        - Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the field location (location TBD)

Foodsafe – Level 1  •  XOCH 0850

Do you want to work in the food industry? Are you currently working in the food industry but desire a greater understanding of safe food handling practices?

This sanitation program is appropriate for food handlers, kitchen staff and dining room attendants. You will learn about the purchase and storage of potentially hazardous foods, personal hygiene, the causes of food borne diseases and maintaining a sanitary food service operation.

Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 5 years.

Traffic Control Certification  •  XFLG 0610

BCCSA’s comprehensive, 2-day standardized Traffic Control Persons (TCPs) course consists of classroom and practical training. There are no prerequisites however, participants should have a good understanding of the rules of the road.

To successfully complete the course, the participant must pass both the written exam and practical evaluation.

Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 3 years.

Requirements: 

  • Photo ID
  • Steel-toed boots with ankle protection
  • Good command of spoken and written English
  • Physically able to participate in the on-road practical
